I need to get Win98 and Win Essentials working together - share files. We can't get rid of Win98, as we have specialized equipment connected to it through special card , and newer windows versions are not supported by equipment vendor.
This puts us to problems. What do we need: windows 98 machine just needs to write files to windows folder. Have you tried creating a new test share? What about using computer name instead of IP? Domain or workgroup? Double check network profile on both server and client. By default, when you add a user account to your network, a subfolder is created for the user under the Users folder on the server. The subfolder can be accessed from a network computer by only the user or the administrator. The permissions are set for each subfolder under Users , so there are no general access permissions for the top-level Users folder. You cannot modify the sharing permissions for the File History Backups , Folder Redirection , and Users server folders. Hence, the folder properties of these server folders do not include a Sharing tab.

It is recommended that you complete any updates or backups that are in progress before you start a folder move or the process may take longer to complete. Many small networks get along fine without a server and with cloud-based e-mail and collaboration, that number has been on the rise. But all three of those have been eradicated under the Server license model, and the new Server Essentials is heir to their converged bloodlines.
The good news is that Server Essentials takes most of the guesswork out of installing a Windows environment for a small organization, while still offering most of the underlying features and administrative functions of the full-blown Standard and Data Center editions of Windows Server.
