Lots of repeat scenarios and feels very scripted as opposed to previous versions. The graphics are superb and the game controls seem to be easier with keyboard and the Xbox controller. Not crazy about controller play, prefer Keyboard mouse. Only other issue with game is the big sales pitch for downloading game rather than having a DVD hard copy.
The version of this game was acquired from the UK through Amazon. Shipping charges not much different from US charges. This game I would rate as a B- or B. Freedom of movement is restricted slightly more than I would desire. Enough game play to make the game worth a little less than what is charged.
I would recommend this game, still involves some good play. I enjoyed the game and story. I just wish it was longer. There were no glitches during play and some of the tools :Lara Craft used were awesome. This is one of the best games I've ever played of any type. The story is clever and engaging. The characters are deep with fantastic voice acting. The puzzles are well thought-out and satisfying.
And the action is freaking' great. This is a major achievement. One person found this helpful. Not the sellers fault but I cannoit play it on my PC. I've played them all since the beginning, This one blows the rest out of the water! I'm going to say upfront that Tomb Raider is a good game, but I need to start by saying that it has bothered me from start to finish on how ugly this game looks at times on PC.
I've been running this game in ultra with no problem and certain parts of the game look like I'm playing through an early PS3 title. Arriving in , this reboot has removed any sort of the 90s sexuality in favor of a survival heroine akin to the characters of The Descent movie and for the most part it works.
Lara herself is well written as a character who starts as someone who is just trying to survive to by the end of the game has grown into the Tomb Raider. Environments are varied enough for the setting that the story takes place in and combat is fast-paced with decent puzzles sprinkled throughout the campaign.
However, there are a few more elements that I have issues with. Moving past the graphics situation I mentioned previously, the biggest issues I have with the game is the story and the combat. The story is fine for what it is as a catalyst for Lara as an origin story, but the rest of the characters are really uninteresting. It feels like someone cast a seasoned AAA actress in a summer blockbuster movie and filled in the rest of the character roles with actors from the local community theater.
At the end of the day, these characters don't matter. Combat is The issue is that there is so much combat. The tombs are also an issue to a lesser extent, it's not like they're bad but most of them don't feel like tombs but more like rooms. They don't always have the sense of scale like they should. Multiplayer is fine, standard modes like Team Deathmatch and a typical unlock system for loadouts. Surprisingly there is a small amount of players to find matches here in the end of so it might be worth trying out to see if you like it.
Some of the issues could be fixed in sequels that were developed for current game consoles while others are issues that many games face and that usually just requires additional polish.
Ultimately I should reiterate that I think this is a good, enjoyable game and that these issues standout more to me because how well made it is for the most part. Tomb Raider gets a thumbs up and is a solid choice if you're looking for a good 3rd person action adventure.
Finally getting around to reviewing this. Hey, it's only been a year. But with the sequel coming out hopefully soon there will likely be interest in this reboot. When people tell me about how things like this are "just games" I have to mention Tomb Raider and the Arkham series as shining examples of the newest, and IMO, best trend in storytelling. Thing is, these kinds of games are, in their own ways, just as compelling and just as artistic as novels, tv shows, or films.
In fact, I'd argue the potential is higher, because it succeeds in a way traditional media can't: it makes you a participant in the story. In a well-done game, that immersion happens through the very action of playing it. In terms of immersion, I think Tomb Raider does an admirable job of pulling it off. Contrary to some of the stated goals of the developers, when playing it I wasn't so much in a place of "caring" what happened to Lara as I was in actually surviving the challenges and keeping from having arrows pierce her skull.
In that sense, I actually found I was putting myself in her shoes boots, actually instead of the kind of emotional investment described by the developers.
This was helped by a good story with a basic question: how far would you go to survive in a seemingly hopeless situation? The antagonist of the story would go pretty darned far, and it's up to Lara to stop him and, in the process, rescue the island. You aren't lacking for direction as to your next step in this game. There are also a number of QTEs Quick Time Events where your control shifts based on screen inputs and not your normal control scheme, as well as seamless loss of control in cut scenes that mimic gameplay.
For example, a part of the game where you are climbing a tower Visuals are stunning, especially on high end systems. The hair effects in particular are amazing. When at rest, Lara has body language that mirrors her state in the game.
In the beginning she almost hugs herself and, I swear, shivers. Near the end of the game when she is more of a predator, her gaze becomes wary and her posture is more aggressive.
A very nice touch. While the collectibles can be completed after the end of the main plot, I was a little perturbed that I couldn't revisit all areas of the game in particular, the excellent gondola sequence or accessing the research station from the beach.
The game forces you to use a "fast travel" system between game areas, which further takes away from the whole open-world look of the game.
