This is for Adobe CS3, the older programming which still has a useful link function the more modern CS programs don't have. The value for me with this book is that it provides more detailed information about the specific CS3 function, and it is possibly of use with other CS programs that are updates of the CS3.

It allows a user to work with their program and learn more with the book. The trouble with this book is it's only for one aspect of the CS3 which means other information is needed for learning and using the programs better, there are the other Adobe CS manuals also.

The value for users is better with self teaching than just using the programs freehand. While that's still an option, often the details and alternatives which are shared in the manuals can assist in progressing uses faster. I purchased this book because it was published by Adobe. I figured, who better to learn about an Adobe product from then Adobe? Big mistake! This book is terrible. It has typos, grammatical mistakes, and instructions that are both incorrect and incredibly difficult to follow.

The pictures and instructions often leave you scratching your head. I've gotten half way through several of their lessons only to give up frustrated. I turned the page back and forth to make sure I didn't miss something only to find out that I hadn't. I am an advanced computer user. In fact, I am a software product trainer. I mention this because I want to make a point of saying that I am not a "newbie".

I know computers and software. Even with my knowledge, I found this book useless. If I wrote this, I would expect Adobe to fire me. Do yourself a favor, steer clear of this book. It's not really the type of book for spot references, but rather the appraoch of "let's start at the beginning and we'll walk you through the features, increasing in complexity as we move through the chapters".

You get files to work with, and step-by-step exercises which employ your newly discovered skills. At the end of the exercises, it tells you what the result should be, so you can determine if you have effectively accomplished the goal. This is a book for the beginner. I have used this same format for both Photoshop and Illustrator and found that I learned more features than students using other approaches.

If you are interested in starting at the beginning and working your way through the software, this is a great book. I used it in the evenings and found that after 4 weeks I had a good command of InDesign. I took a course in InDesign, but it did not teach me what I needed to know for my particular application book layout. I've been looking for books on InDesign that would provide the tutorials that would benefit me the most, and although the other books in my Adobe library are helpful, Adobe InDesign Revealed gave me exactly what I needed and more.
